How to Clean Up Your LinkedIn Profile Before a Job Search

Short answer: turn off profile update sharing, then fix your photo, headline and About section, update experience and skills, set Open to Work to “Recruiters only”, and clear old posts, comments and likes that don’t fit the job you want. The full checklist takes about an hour.

The 10-step checklist

1. Turn off profile update sharing first

Go to Settings → Visibility and switch off Share profile updates with your network. Otherwise every edit you make may show up in your connections’ feeds, including your current colleagues’.

2. Use a current, clear photo

A recent photo where your face is easy to see, with a plain background. Recruiters skim; a missing or blurry photo makes a profile look abandoned.

3. Rewrite your headline for the job you want

Your headline is the line people see in search results. Write the role you are aiming for and your strongest skills, for example “QA Engineer · Playwright, TypeScript · Test automation”, instead of just your current title.

4. Update the About section

Three short paragraphs: what you do, what you are good at (with one or two numbers), and what you are looking for next. Use the words recruiters search for in your field.

5. Bring experience up to date

Add your current role, two or three results per job, and remove details nobody needs anymore. Make sure dates match your CV.

6. Clean up skills

Keep skills that match the jobs you want and move them to the top. Remove ones you would not want to be interviewed on.

7. Set Open to Work to “Recruiters only”

Click Open to → Finding a new job, add the job titles and locations, and under visibility choose Recruiters only. This hides the green frame from your network and keeps the signal away from recruiters at your current company.

8. Customize your profile URL

On your profile, click Edit public profile & URL and change the random address to something like linkedin.com/in/yourname. It looks better on your CV.

9. Clean up old posts, comments and likes

Your Activity section is public, and recruiters do scroll it. Remove posts from a past career, heated debates, jokes that aged badly, and likes on content you no longer stand behind. Guides:

Deleting is quiet: LinkedIn does not notify anyone when you remove a post, comment or like. If you have hundreds of items, Activity Cleaner for LinkedIn is a free Chrome extension that deletes them for you at a safe, human-like pace. Run a dry run first to see how much there is.

10. Check your profile as a stranger sees it

On your profile, open Edit public profile & URL to preview what people outside your network see. Fix anything that looks odd, then turn profile update sharing back on if you want your network to notice your new headline.

FAQ

Will my connections see every change I make?

Only if profile update sharing is on. Turn it off in Settings → Visibility before you start editing (step 1).

Can my current employer see that I’m open to work?

With “Recruiters only”, LinkedIn hides the signal from recruiters at your current company, but it can’t guarantee complete privacy, so keep that in mind.

Should I delete old LinkedIn posts before a job search?

Delete anything that doesn’t fit the role you want. You don’t need an empty profile: keep posts that show your skills and results.
